The Gunnery Historic Restoration
The Gunnery is a three-storey State Heritage building on Sydney Harbour in Woolloomooloo built in 1900. Fireshield Steel 1001 was used to fire rate the existing timber floor and roof structure.
Once complete, the Gunnery will be a contemporary art facility with expanded exhibition spaces, increased artist studios, multi-use spaces for education and digital connectivity. The refurbishment removes layers of non-original, unsympathetic, and redundant building elements to bring the building back to a more original state.
The issue for the Architects was to find a solution that would allow them to keep the existing:
- Timber floorboards.
- Timber floor joists.
- Timber trusses.
Fireshield Steel 1001 can be used to protect and reduce the char rate of existing historical structural timber members.
Fireshield completed a specific design solution that allowed FDC to apply the pigmented Steel 1001 to the existing timber structure providing the fire rating required. The protected timber could be left exposed, top coated any colour or enclosed behind the suspended ceiling system.
